How Much Can You Earn As A Transcriber With CastingWords?

Thanks for checking out my CastingWords review.

CastingWords is an online platform designed to provide transcription work to freelance transcriptionists.

In my review today I will be finding out not only if CastingWords is a legit transcription company, but also how much you could earn on the platform as a paid transcriber.

What is CastingWords?

CastingWords is a legit transcription company, and the good news is that it hires both newbies and experienced transcribers to convert short audio files into text.

It was founded in 2005 with the aim of connecting freelancer transcribers and editors to customers who want their audio files transcribed.m The company is purely online-based, meaning that you can work remotely from the comfort of your home or office.

How Do You Get Started With CastingWords?

As stated above, CastingWords is a platform for beginners, it does not have stringent requirements on experience. They accept applicants from all walks of life, and you can apply from anywhere so long as you have a computer with internet access.

The application process is very easy. All that is required is your name, email address, city and country of residence. You also need to provide your PayPal address to receive payments.

However, like any other transcription platform, you must submit a short bio and undertake a transcription test to assess your skills.

The test includes transcribing audio clips with durations ranging from 90 seconds to 6 minutes.

The good news is that CastingWords offers applicants several chances to carry out the test.

This means that you can re-do the test later even if you fail at the first time of asking. If you do get hired, you may start completing jobs right away.

How Many Jobs Can You Get With CastingWords?

CastingWords offers plenty of transcription jobs most of the time. All you have to do is claim any audio file that you strongly believe you can transcribe within the set deadline.

Fortunately, all available audio files that need transcribing come attached with a deadline.

Also, CastingWords will indicate the difficulty level of the job ranging from easy to difficult. You will also see what type of file you will be converting, e.g. an interview or an academic lecture.

How Much Can You Earn With CastingWords?

In terms of earnings, the amount of money you are supposed to get is clearly indicated next to the audio file.

The pay rate is not exact as it ranges from $0.30 to $0.92 per audio minute transcribed.

That doesn’t mean you get paid these rates per minute. That’s because it could take you several minutes to transcribe one minute of audio, especially when it is difficult to hear what is being said, or who is speaking when there are multiple people in a meeting.

However, you could earn more money by delivering high quality work consistently.

CastingWords offers flexible working hours. You can work as much or as little as you want without having to wait for email invitations. The job board always has plenty of jobs that you can do at anytime from anywhere.

How Can You Get The Most Out Of Working With CastingWords?

Transcription is not as easy as it might seem to be. This is particularly true if you are just starting out as a transcriber.

Fortunately, CastingWords makes it easy for everyone by offering its members a detailed style guide that you can use for reference.

Always keep the style guide open while you are working to help you in case you get stuck.

What is worth noting is that CastingWords often rewards transcribers with bonuses for quality work. For every job you complete successfully, you will earn a particular score ranging from 1 to 10.

Work with scores below 4 is not paid for while a transcript with a score above 6 earns 1.5 times more than the regular rate.

With this in mind, it is prudent that you deliver high-quality work regularly to enhance your score and receive lucrative bonuses frequently. The higher your average score, the more money you will get.

How And When Will You Get Paid By CastingWords?

CastingWords has a very low payout threshold of only $1. However, you cannot cash out at anytime as they only allow payment requests on Fridays.

In addition, all payments are transacted through PayPal, meaning that you must have a verified PayPal account to cash out.

Why CastingWords May Be Worth Joining

Some Things You Need To Consider If Joining CastingWords

Is CastingWords Worth It?

CastingWords is one of the best transcription companies that hire both beginners and experienced transcribers. The company does not look for prior experience, but lays emphasis on your ability to produce high-quality transcripts.

In addition, the pay rate is reasonable with lucrative bonuses for quality of work. CastingWords usually has plenty of work, and you can work as much or as little as you want.

Putting all these factors into consideration, CastingWords is a website worth joining if you want to make money as a transcriber.

Star Rating 3.5/5-A good transcription job platform for beginners and experienced transcribers too. As you get better at transcription, your earning should increase accordingly working on this platform.

  1. Thanks for the great post, I had no idea about this page and I have been looking for some extra work like this, doing transcriptions, and when you can do it in 2 or more languages, that makes it more profitable as well, most of the freelance pages that have this kind of works either don’t pay much or are hard to qualify for newbies. I especially like also that they pay you to your pay pal account instead of having to deal with the risk of putting your account details when you are just doing an extra work. I’ll for sure give it a try and have bookmarked your pages as I saw that you have some other interesting online work posts. Have a  great day and all the best.

    1. Hi Juan,

Thanks for your kind comment. Transcription is a legit way to make money online. It does take practice however, and your productivity can often be affected by low quality recordings and multiple speakers in meetings, so that is something you have to get used to. Thanks again.

  2. Thank you for the information about Transcription through Casting Works.  This does sound like a legit way to make money online.  I noticed that in a response to another comment left you said you had done this work before.  That makes it even more interesting, well not so much for me, but for someone who has good typing skills, can spell!

Sounds like the company has a plan for you to gain experience and advance in pay a little.  This is a new company for me, and if you don’t want to have your own business online, a reasonable route to pursue.  I would think that trying to work for this Casting Works service while building your own business might be a bit too much, especially if you are also working, even part-time.

Again, I see some good features for some people.  Maybe there will be someone read this who is able to follow through with this.

    1. Hi Sami,

Yes this is a Transcription Platform that beginners can try as well as more experienced transcriptionists. It can be a place to get valuable experience. Transcription definitely isn’t easy because you have to be very focused to maintain a high standard of work. Consistent high quality work means ultimately more work.

If you are building a website business then it will be difficult to combine the two (talking from experience). Transcription requires your full attention, not something you can dip into now and again. Thanks for your comment.

  3. I personally tried transcribing awhile, but found myself too slow even though I am able to type fast. I guess it takes some experience and time before being able to transcribe faster which results in more pay. Another platform that I know similar to CastingWords is Rev that pays about the same as well. In any case, great review on another opportunity for transcribing! Glad to know there’s more platforms out there that are legit as well.

    1. Hi Terence,

Yes I’ve tried transcribing myself and it does take practice. It’s not just about typing fast but also listening carefully, understanding correct punctuation and sometimes having good quality equipment. Thanks for your comment.
