How Much Can You Earn With EyeEm?

EyeEm Review

Thanks for checking out my EyeEm review.

Eyeem is a platform that claims you can earn money by selling your photos and videos via the site.

In my review today I will be discovering whether you really can make money on this site, and if so how much you can earn.

To help me do this I will be uncovering what real users are saying about it. I will also be weighing up what the pros and cons are likely to be to help you decide if Eyeem is the best place for you to sell your photos.

First however let’s find out a bit more about the Eyeem platform.

About EyeEm

EyeEm is a global online community for freelance photographers. The platform allows creators to interact, share ideas, gain exposure and find a market for their works of art and imagery.

Essentially, EyeEm acts as a marketplace where photographers can sell their best videos and imagery. Founded in 2011, EyeEm has experienced considerable growth to become one of the leading online platforms tailored for photographers.

The community currently boasts of over 22 million members with the numbers rising every day.

Joining EyeEm

Joining EyeEm is very easy. You don’t  need to be a professional photographer to become a member. EyeEm accepts creators from all over the world. You only need access to a smartphone or PC to sign up.

App users may register by selecting “Join Market” on the EyeEm app while web users may sign up by clicking on the “Start Selling” button on the EyeEm website. If you wish to sell your photos as a company, you need to select the “Sell Photos as Company” box.

How does EyeEm work?

EyeEm works like any other stock photo platform where you upload your photos and wait for buyers to purchase them.

The only major difference is that EyeEm works like interactive social media platforms like Instagram where members can view, like or comment on your photos.

Additionally, EyeEm offers relatively competitive rates for every photo sold. You can earn as much as 55% per total sale. Also, you get to keep the copyrights to your photos, meaning that you can resell the same photo several times to different buyers.

What is interesting is that EyeEm works with other reputable photo agencies such as Getty Images and Alamy as distribution partners. This allows members to gain more exposure and find more customers for their images through these leading photo agency platforms.

Nevertheless, making money on this platform is not necessarily easy. You can’t upload just any photo and expect to find buyers. Your photos must meet certain requirements for EyeEm to approve them.

For this reason, all visuals and images uploaded must go through a stringent review process before approval.

The period of the review process ranges from a couple of days to a few weeks depending on your submission. Once approved, your images will go straight to your portfolio.

If you are lucky, some of these photos may make it to EyeEm’s premium collection where it is easier to find potential buyers.

It is worth noting that finding buyers can take a long time considering the fact that you will be competing against millions of other freelancers. Even though EyeEm allows you to tag and add keywords to your photos, this strategy doesn’t guarantee sales. You have to market your work manually in order to attract customers.

How much can you earn with EyeEm?

As of February 2021 Eyeem are introducing a new pricing levels.

For every photo you sell, you will receive up to 55% of the total revenue for that particular image. There are 4 payout levels, with level 1 being the highest.

Your level is determined by the amount of revenue you have generated via EyeEm in the last 12 months. This gives you your Revenue Threshold.  The higher your Revenue Threshold, the higher your License Revenue Share.

See the levels of pay below;

Revenue Threshold   (Pay Out Level 4)   $0-$299        25% License Revenue Share

Revenue Threshold  (Pay Out Level 3)    $300-$2,999)   35% License Revenue Share

Revenue Threshold   (Pay Out Level 2)   $3,000-$6,999) 45% License Revenue Share

Revenue Threshold   (Pay Out Level 1)    $7,000 +              55% License Revenue Share

The amount earned for your photos however depends on the license purchased by the buyer. EyeEm offers two types of licenses;

  1. Standard License
  2. Extended License

As mentioned earlier, you will remain the copyright holder of the photo.

Overall the income potential of this platform could be quite reasonable, depending of course upon the quality of your photos.

You can also increase your earnings by taking part in missions to win travel vouchers and access to photography courses. These missions are simply photography tasks whereby members are required to submit their best photos based on a specific topic.

When and how does EyeEm pay?

EyeEm does not have a minimum payout threshold. Once you have sold any of your photos, you may request for payment right away by going to the earnings section of your members’ account.

Nevertheless, you need a PayPal account, as this is the only payment method available.

Eyeem Reviews From Real Users

At the time of my latest update of this review  EyeEm has a score of 4.3/5 from 222,198 reviews at Google Play.

Most users are happy with their experience using the app. Some reporting that they have managed to sell their photos, and have been paid.

Some members however are frustrated with the fact that they haven’t managed to sell many photos. Others complain about technical glitches whilst using the App.

At the App Store The App has a score of 4.8/5 from 2967 reviews. Again most users are happy with their experience with the app and the community, however some also complain about glitches with the app, and the difficulty in getting sales.

Some Final Thoughts On Eyeem

EyeEm is a good platform for freelance photographers to showcase their works of art.

The platform has a solid online following that guarantees excellent exposure for your imagery. Also, the pay is good and there is no payout threshold.

The only problem is that you have to compete against millions of other photographers to attract potential customers. Other than that, EyeEm is a platform worth joining.

  1. My first sale with EYEEM was $45.00. Since then I have seen earning drop to $6 per photo, to $4 per photo, to $1 per photo, to its current level where I now only receive 1 cent for every photo they sell. Wrote to EYEEM to find out what was going on and was told…

The image license price on our website is set as ‘per image license and does not include any applicable discounts. Hence, lower payouts can occur when clients purchase images through subscriptions, photo packs, or via one of our third-party distribution partners’ sites like Getty or Adobe. We as EyeEm, have no control over our distribution partners’ pricing. After a photo has been sold through one of our partners’ sites, our partners keep a commission for offering EyeEm content on their website. The net revenue after any commission, known as your license revenue share, is then shared according to our updated payout structure.

This sounds like a cop out from EYEEM to me. Or shows the way these stock sights have found of selling our photos for minimal return to the photographer.

14 of my last 20 images sold on EYEEM have received 1 cent, the most for the other 6 was 10 cents. At this rate any new photographers would have to sell 30,000 images to Mose to the next commission level, and then 300,000 after that to move up again. This is so wrong on all levels.
I would suggest if you want to sell photos then research this thoroughly before joining one of these websites. However,I would avoid EYEEM altogether until they sort this farce out

    1. Hi Jon,
Thanks for sharing your experience with Eyeem. Earning one cent for a photo really isn’t worth the time it takes to upload the photo to the platform. Your comment will of course be of interest to my readers so I appreciate you taking the time to give your feedback. It will be interesting to see if any more readers who use Eyeem are experiencing the same as you. Thanks again.

  2. I sold 2 photos on this platform. One for 0,09$ and one for 0,2$ and then I decided to delete my profile. It’s not worth it

    1. Hi Ivana,
Thanks for sharing your experience of The Eyeem App. Sorry to hear that it didn’t work out. I hope you find a platform that works for you. I have reviewed other platforms for making money with photos HERE

  3. I’m a Eyeem user since 3-4 months. I have uploaded so far almost 200 photographs. These are good quality images in my honest opinion. At this moment, I haven’t got any photo sold unfortunately. It seems to have very slow movement this page.
At the same time I have started to upload photos on another site and I have sold 5 pictures so far. In addition to this, I have to say that I have uploaded almost 100 pictures on this other page. So I’m getting a better result on this.
I hope to see my sales starting soon on Eyeem!

    1. Hi Mariano,
Thanks for sharing your experience with Eyeem. Selling your photographs can be difficult on any platform. However it sounds as if you are starting to have some success, albeit so far only on another platform. I’m sure before too long you will also get a sale on Eyeem.
Please update my readers with your progress at Eyeem. Thanks again.

    1. 0.02USD I get for my first foto selling via Getty images. After 3 years and more then 10000 pictures uploads.That’s 50% of the selling price.See attached picture selling price from Getty image S 50 € M 175 € L 385 €.
However no one can Proof this except Eyeem. Great Application Made in Germany,! 🙂

  4. I think this will be the only negative revue on this site and have a suspicion it will not be included. I found the Eyeem customer services awful, the site facilities flawed. As a social media site Facebook is just as good, as a commercial site I cannot say I deleted my account within two weeks after wasting much time preparing and downloading images that never appeared. Instructions on how to delete images was another example of the site having flaws in it’s programming.

It’s fun while working and trying to earn some money with EyeEm, with over 22 million people subscribed to the platform, and it’s growing size daily.

I believe those with passion for photography should not hesitate to join as it’s equally a marketplace for people (freelance photographers) to showcase their videos and photos.

    1. Hi Jane,
I agree, if you have a passion for photography then platforms like this can help you earn a little extra, or more if you have excellent skills. If you have a real passion and knowledge of photography however then my first recommendation would be affiliate marketing. Best of luck with your endeavours.

  9. My husband loves taking photos and joining EyeEm would make him earn from his hobby.

This is a great platform for income making, but  with lots of competition, this surely is a challenge for the photographers out there.

    Thanks for this great information.

    Marita

    1. Hi Marita,
Yes the competition is of a high standard but with plenty of practice your husband can take photos that could compete with the best. Best of luck to him.

  10. Thank you for your review on EyeEm. It seems like a good platform to join but I don’t think that can be the main income source since the competition is very high plus you have to go through the review process. However, I would like to give it a shot if my picture would sell or not. It can be a nice passive income. We will see how it goes, wish me luck!

    1. Hi Nuttanee,
Yes, you can’t rely on this platform as a regular income source for the reasons you mentioned. Over time you can improve your skills and probably your income too. I agree it’s worth a shot…..best of luck! Thanks for your comment.

    Great job.

Yes, Platforms Like EyeEm offer non professional photographers an opportunity to earn from your best photos. There is usually tough competition, but of course you will get more skilled the more practice you get. Thanks for your comment.
