Online transcription is something that you can get started in right away without any previous experience or qualifications.

Transcription work can be found on online transcription platforms that are paid by their clients to have transcription work done. However, not all of these platforms want beginners. Some require experienced transcribers than can demonstrate a very high quality of work.

Other platforms however, such as the 7 I have listed below, don’t insist upon previous experience being required before applying.

They do however require you to take a test to ensure that you are able to listen carefully to audio recordings, and have a good understanding of grammar. Being able to type well is also an advantage when it comes to transcription.

So if you are an active listener with good language skills then it is possible to earn money online through these transcription platforms.

2. Rev.com

All that is required of you to join Rev.com initially is the completion of a brief quiz that will test your language and grammar skills. Understandably Rev.com is strict when it comes to quality.

You then just need to submit a transcription sample so the site can get an idea of the quality of work you can produce. Your sample will be assessed and Rev.com will respond within 48 hours.

Before you submit your work it is recommended that you read their style guides, tutorials and manuals to see what Rev.com expects in terms of style and quality of work.

Like all transcription platforms you will be expected to have a high level of accuracy. and a good understanding of punctuation.

3. Focus Forward Transcription

Focus Forward Transcription requires new members to download their instructions and transcription program. You need to read this carefully before downloading an audio file test that you will need to transcribe.

When you have completed the test, you upload it with your application. The platform will review your test and respond within 48 hours.

Focus Forward Transcription is open to new transcribers from around the world and is a very flexible platform. If you pass the test and become a member, the site provides an online scheduling tool which allows you to share your availability with the site. You can therefore choose the exact hours and days of the week you want to work.

4. GoTranscript

GoTranscript is another transcription platform that offers paid transcription work to beginners from around the globe.

All that is needed is a computer and internet connection. Payments will be made to you via PayPal weekly. You can also choose the projects you want, and the site gives feedback on your work to help you improve.

Before you take the required test you should read the available guidelines and study the samples that are provided.

5. GMR Transcription

GMR Transcription state that all you need is a computer, high speed internet, MS Office, foot pedal and over the ear headphones to work as a transcriber with their platform. They don’t insist upon you having any experience, although like other transcription platforms for beginners, you will be required to pass a test.

You will also be required to complete 2 hours worth of audio before you get any paid work. GMR Transcription guarantees 99% accuracy to their clients, so obviously they need to ensure the work provided by their transcriptionists is of a high quality.

If you meet the standards required you can choose the hours you want to work by picking only the assignments you want.

6. Tigerfish

Tigerfish has opportunities for U.S citizens aged 18 years and older. Those wanting to join the site will need to download a free copy of the Express Scribe transcription software and the sites own Transcription Style Guide. Other than that all that is required is a computer with high speed internet connection.

Although previous experience isn’t needed in order to join Tigerfish, it is important to read and understand the style of transcription that is required.

As with other platforms for beginners, you will be required to take a test to determine your skill level. The test is broken up into three parts which require transcribing including a focus group, an interview and presentation. You must pass all three parts and indicate how long each part of the test took you to complete.

7. CastingWords

CastingWords is another transcription site available to beginners from across the globe. As long as you have a computer with internet access and a PayPal account you can apply.

Like all the other transcription platforms here you will be required to take a test to check your skill level. You will be required to transcribe short audio clips. The good news is that you don’t have to pass the test on the first try and you get several chances.

Once you’ve passed the test you will get some of the lower paying transcription work to complete and get regular feedback to help improve your standard of work.
